Capital Pride Announces Additional Performers for 2005 Gay Pride Festival
Location: Washington DC Category: Daily News Events Washington, DC - Capital Pride announced this week that Deborah Cox, Amber, Chi Chi LaRue, Rip Taylor, Frenchie Davis and Namoli Brennet will headline this year's Main Stage at the Capital Pride Street Festival. Biographies of the national performers follow.
"We are very excited about the lineup of talent we have for this year's festival," said Robert York, director of Capital Pride. "Deborah Cox and Amber have been recording great dance music for years. Chi Chi LaRue is a living legend in the gay community. Bob Mould has a strong following from his days fronting Hüsker Dü and Sugar. Rip Taylor has been a fixture in show business for decades. Frenchie Davis is one of 'American Idol's' breakout stars. And Namoli Brennet is a rising transgender star. "
These national performers will join numerous local and regional performers at the Main Stage during the Capital Pride Street Festival on Sunday, June 12, The Street Festival, on Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 7th Sts., N.W., opens at 11:30 a.m.
Deborah Cox - Deborah's 1995 debut album included the hits "Sentimental" (a Top 5 R&B single), "Who Do U Love" (a Top 20 pop single), "Where Do We Go From Here" and "The Sound Of My Tears."
Amber - The daughter of an opera singer and a composer, singer, and piano teacher, Amber knew that her eventual profession would involve music. Amber collaborated with the Berman Brothers -- a.k.a. Real McCoy -- and released the international hit single "This Is the Night," which is part of almost every dance party compilation.
Chi Chi LaRue - Few directors have had such an impact on gay adult video as Chi Chi LaRue. At age 20, living in Minnesota, the now famous alter ego Chi Chi LaRue emerged, forming half the duo, The Weather Gals. Today, Chi Chi runs Rascal Video, Live and Raw, and performs around the world at safe sex benefits and nightclubs.
Bob Mould - In the panoply of American post-punk rockers, Bob Mould's name is synonymous with innovation, passion and songcraft. Those qualities infuse Mould's new record, Body of Song (YepRoc). At its core, Body of Song is a return to the blend of punk and pop that Mould fashioned in the 1980s with Hüsker Dü and in the 1990s with Sugar. Fans of those bands and Mould's solo work will find that new songs such as "Best Thing," "Missing You" and "Paralyzed" brim over with the power, ebullience and melody that have been his trademark in more than two decades of music.
Rip Taylor - With recent appearances in Jackass, The Bonnie Hunt Show and next in Rob Reiner's new movie, Alex and Emma, the legendary King of Confetti, Rip Taylor, has been introduced to a new generation of fans - another reason he has a star on Hollywood Boulevard for movies, film and television.
Although many of his new admirers may not realize it, Rip Taylor has dazzled audiences worldwide in a career that has spanned more than 40 years. A master of comedic timing and consummate showman, Rip has headlined in Las Vegas, appeared on hundreds of television shows, played the lead in various plays and musicals, and frequently taken a dramatic turn in feature films.
Frenchie Davis - One of the standouts of season two of American Idol, Frenchie Davis's powerhouse voice has landed her on Broadway in Rent and in the touring company of Dreamgirls.
Namoli Brennet - Transgender musician Namoli Brennet was the creative force behind two CDs, Boy in a Dress and Welcome to the Afterglow. Contributing as writer, engineer, producer and performer, Namoli has finally realized a lifelong dream of "being in total control." Namoli's transcendent, impassioned performances have won over fans from San Francisco to Philadelphia; Performing Songwriter magazine says of her, "Brennet sings and plays with an intensity and intelligence that can't be ignored."
Dr. Draw - . This violin virtuoso and club sensation uses a tantalizing fusion of several musical genres to enrapture. His eclectic range of musical talents has brought the young dynamo to the attention of some of the continent's most respected musicians.
