Murdered, Dismembered Gay Men Lead Police on Nationwide Investigation
Written By Ross von Metzke Location: Tampa, FL Category: Daily News (Tampa Bay, FL) — The details were gruesome: a gay man in Tampa was choked, dismembered and stuffed into several garbage bags. Then another met a similar fate.
For the last two years, evidence has pointed to Scott Schweickert, 39, of Illinois and Steven Lorenzo, 46, who have not been formally charged with the murders of Jason Galehouse and Michael Wachholtz in 2003, but are in jail on other charges.
Now several cases, including two gay men missing in Chicago, are being examined for a possible connection to the pair, leading police on a cross-country search for more evidence.
“We believe there could be dozens more victims out there,” said Brian Winfield, a spokesman for Equality Florida, a statewide advocacy group for LGBT rights. According to the affidavit released last week, investigators searched Lorenzo's Seminole Heights home last year and found newspaper articles about Galehouse, Wachholtz and “other missing or dead individuals.”
They also found on Lorenzo's computer and on digital tapes thousands of images depicting sex acts in which men were bound and appeared to be “in a comatose-like state,” according to the affidavit.
Police are currently researching the newspaper articles with corresponding, local police departments for any additional information that might help with the investigation.
